The Association is a charitable association which is open to all members of the public.
It was formed by a group of parents and teachers in 1972 and was at first called the Cheshire and North Wales Dyslexia Association. However, although now called the Cheshire Dyslexia Association it now encompasses North Wales again as their association has folded.

Stockport, Trafford and Wirral are offshoots and are now fully independent associations in their own right. The association is a registered charity and is affiliated to the national body, The British Dyslexia Association.

Within its constitution the major aims are:

* to inform the public of the nature of the problem of dyslexia and its incidence in the community, to encourage public support and understanding and to promote and widen recognition of the disability.

* to give information and support to parents and others in their attempts to find education which will enable the dyslexic individual to reach his or her full potential.

* to interest students, teachers and local education authorities in the further study of the problems and

* to encourage the provision of extra teaching effort and the establishment of in-service training.

In the 38 years since its formation the Association has worked closely with parents and teachers and it has had substantial involvement with the Cheshire Education Authority in developing policies to help dyslexic pupils. It has a current membership of some 120 persons. Its work is carried out entirely by voluntary persons elected as officers of the Association by its members and the funds which it requires to carry out this work have been raised through subscriptions, generous donations made by individual members of the public, and businesses within Cheshire.

We are now a small group of dedicated volunteers and would welcome additional expertise to our committee. If you feel you have any time to offer please ring 01270 668600.
